Quiet Like Fog

Autumn in the old town

Rooftops after the rain.
Rooftops after the rain.

The first properly cold evening of the year arrived with a short, heavy rain. Afterwards the old town had that particular shine that only lasts until the streets dry.

I walked the usual loop: down past the market, along the river and up the steep lane behind the church. The light was already fading, so most of the pictures are of reflections — shop windows in puddles, street lamps on wet stone.

There is something about the first cold evening that makes people walk slower. Fewer phones out, more scarves. I like photographing the town at this time of year more than in summer; it feels like it belongs to the people who live here again.
